Route description
Run the UK’s largest onshore windfarm at Whitelee. This is a 13km/8Mile route from the Visitor Centre, along the trail tracks of the wind farm, around Lochgoin Reservoir, and back to the visitor centre. Tracks are hard with stone underfoot, and features a little tarmac’d road section. The undulating course reaches its highest point after about 1.5 miles at the Blackwood Hill Viewpoint.
The Windfarm is on top of the hill for a reason and that’s the weather, so check the weather before venturing out. The Whitelees website has useful safety information. The windfarm is about 20 minutes from Glasgow (see directions here) and easy parking is available at the visitor centre. The windfarm is open 24 hours a day, however the visitor centre and cafe for that all important cake and coffee are open from 10am to 4.30/5pm.
There is also a shorter 5km loop (to be updated).
